April 2007 - "Whats Cooking?"

On Sunday, May 6, more than 40,000 caring individuals will participate in The Walk for Hunger, beginning and ending at Boston Common.  I wouldlike to urge Berkshire County residents to take part in this wonderful Massachusetts tradition that helps families right here in our community who are facing hunger.  There is a disturbing level of hunger currently in the Commonwealth, and we all can do something to alleviate that need!

With poverty still plaguing Massachusetts, many families are seeing their monthly incomes stretched to the limits.  At the Berkshire Food Project, many of the peopleseeking food assistance are working, but their wages are just too low to cover all of their expenses.  Families are forced to go without food in order to pay their rent, utility, and medical bills. As the cost of living continues to rise, more and more families are turning to emergency food programs for assistance. Our hungry neighbors need help more than ever. The number of meals the Berkshire Food Project serves continues to rise each new year.

The funding from the Walk for Hunger enables us at the Berkshire Food Projectto provide nourishing food to those in need.  Your participation, either by walking or sponsoring a walker, will make an enormous difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.

For more information, please call the Berkshire Food Project at 664-7378 or Project Bread at 617-723-5000 or visit  www.projectbread.org I hope you will join us in the fight against hunger.

Sincerely,

Valerie Schwarz
